How Long Does Dry Cleaning Take? Turnaround Times Guide

How Long Does Dry Cleaning Take? Typical Turnaround Times Explained

Got a suit to wear on Friday, a dress for a wedding or a winter coat that needs refreshing before the cold sets in? Knowing how long dry cleaning takes makes it far easier to plan ahead – and saves the last-minute panic the night before.

At The Laundry Lab, we collect your dry cleaning from your door in London, clean it with care and deliver it back, so you’re never tied to a shop’s opening hours. In this guide, we explain typical turnaround times, what can slow things down and how to make sure your clothes are back in time for the moments that matter.

The short answer: Most everyday dry cleaning – shirts, suits, dresses and jackets – takes around 24 to 72 hours. Delicate eveningwear can take up to a week, and wedding dresses can take several weeks. With a collection and delivery service, allow a little extra time for pickup and return.

How Long Does Dry Cleaning Usually Take?

For standard garments, most dry cleaners work to a turnaround of one to three days. Simple items like shirts and trousers move through quickly, while structured, delicate or heavily stained pieces need more hands-on time.

The table below shows typical turnaround times across the industry, alongside prices from our Pricing & Services page, so you can plan both your timing and your budget.

Why Does Dry Cleaning Take More Than a Few Hours?

The machine cycle itself is fairly quick. What takes time is everything around it – the inspection, stain treatment and finishing that separate a garment that’s simply been through a machine from one that comes back looking its best. Here’s what happens to every item we clean.

1. Inspection

We check each garment’s fabric, care label, buttons, trims and lining, and note any stains or existing damage. This tells us whether dry cleaning is the right method, or whether a gentler option such as wet cleaning would suit it better.

2. Stain pre-treatment

Oil, food, make-up and drink stains all behave differently, so each is treated individually before cleaning. Older or set-in stains can need more than one treatment – one of the most common reasons an item takes longer.

3. Cleaning

Garments are cleaned in a specialist machine using a solvent rather than water, lifting oils and grime without the shrinkage or distortion water can cause. For the full picture, read our guide to how dry cleaning works.

4. Finishing and quality checks

Finally, each item is steamed, pressed and shaped – a tailored jacket needs attention to its lapels, shoulders and sleeves – then checked again before it’s packed for delivery.

What Affects Dry Cleaning Turnaround Times?

Fabric and construction

Everyday businesswear is straightforward. Silk, velvet, leather, suede and beaded or embellished pieces need specialist handling, and some need a different cleaning method altogether.

Stains and condition

A lightly worn jacket is quick to turn around; a dress with several stubborn marks is not. We’d always rather take a little longer than risk damaging the fabric or colour with aggressive treatment.

Size of the order

A single suit and a full wardrobe refresh – or a pile of duvets and curtains – won’t take the same time. If you’re sending a large order, let us know when you need it back.

Busy seasons

Demand rises in the run-up to Christmas, during party season and summer weddings, and when winter coats come out of storage. Booking a few days earlier at these times gives you a comfortable buffer.

Collection and delivery slots

With a collection service, timing depends on your pickup and delivery slots as well as the cleaning itself. When you book online, choose slots that leave enough time before your deadline.

Can You Get Same-Day Dry Cleaning in London?

Some London dry cleaners offer same-day or express services, but not every garment is suitable. Simple items like shirts are easier to rush; delicate, stained or structured pieces usually need the full process to be done properly.

If you need something back urgently, get in touch before you book. Tell us what the item is, when you need it and whether it has any stains or special care requirements, and we’ll let you know what’s possible.

How Far Ahead Should You Book Dry Cleaning Before an Event?

  • Suits and workwear: book at least three to four days before you need them.

  • Coats, dresses and partywear: allow up to a week, especially in busy periods.

  • Evening gowns and delicate fabrics: allow at least a week, longer if there are stains.

  • Wedding dresses: allow several weeks – see wedding dress cleaning on our pricing page.

When your order arrives, check each item straight away – especially if it’s for a big occasion – so there’s time to raise anything before the day.

Tips to Avoid Dry Cleaning Delays

  • Book early: give yourself extra time before weddings, interviews and events.

  • Tell us about stains: what caused them, and roughly when, helps us choose the right treatment.

  • Don’t scrub at stains at home: household products and rubbing can set stains or damage fibres.

  • Empty pockets: pens, tissues and coins can damage garments during cleaning.

  • Share your deadline: let us know when you need your clothes back when you book.

Is Dry Cleaning Faster Than Washing at Home?

Not cycle for cycle – a home wash can be done in an hour. But that doesn’t include drying, pressing and finishing, and it isn’t an option for dry-clean-only garments. With collection and delivery, the time you actually spend is a couple of minutes booking online, rather than an evening of washing and ironing. Our laundry collection and delivery service works the same way for everyday washing.
